At Dutchman Creek Middle School, a simple idea has transformed into a powerful learning experience for students in the UP program. Thanks to grant funding through the Foundation for Rock Hill Schools and the generous support of Knowledge Perk Coffee, the Coffee Cart project has provided students with hands-on opportunities to develop essential life skills while fostering a sense of inclusion and community within the school.
Student Leadership and Ownership
From the moment the Coffee Cart project was introduced, students took charge. “The students have responded in an incredibly positive way to this project. They have been involved from the minute we received this project,” said their teacher. They selected carts, aprons, Keurig machines, and other essentials to bring their vision to life. Beyond just setting up the cart, they also took on key roles, serving as Coffee Managers, Administrative Assistants, and Baristas. “They put together the menu for the coffee cart and often ask staff members what they could add to the menu,” their teacher added. Their involvement has gone beyond participation—it has instilled a deep sense of pride and ownership in their work.
The impact extends far beyond serving coffee. Students are learning crucial skills such as money management, teamwork, and customer service—lessons that will benefit them as they transition into adulthood. “They have learned skills about how to handle money that assists them in some of their daily living goals. They have learned the importance of teamwork and hard work that they can carry on as they transition to adulthood,” their teacher explained. More importantly, they take immense pride in their work, knowing they are contributing to their school community in a meaningful way.
The Role of Grant Funding and Community Partnerships
The success of the Coffee Cart project would not have been possible without the critical support of grant funding through the Foundation for Rock Hill Schools and the willingness of Knowledge Perk Coffee to invest in students’ futures. The grant provided the startup funds necessary to get the project off the ground, covering equipment, supplies, and initial setup costs. “The grant money was used to give the Coffee Cart a huge boost. It provided all its startup fees to get it up and running. We were able to purchase the equipment and all the items needed to start,” their teacher shared. Because of this funding, the Coffee Cart was able to launch quickly, ensuring both current and future students in the UP program can benefit from the experience.
Beyond the financial impact, the students deeply appreciate the support from the broader community. “They also remember the time when the Foundation came and presented the check, and they know that there are people in the community that care about them. It means the world to them,” their teacher noted. That encouragement serves as a lasting source of motivation.
A Lasting Impact Through the UP Program
The Coffee Cart is not just a short-term initiative—it has become an integral part of Dutchman Creek’s UP program and will continue for years to come. Students engage in daily life skills lessons that directly support their roles within the cart, reinforcing practical applications of their learning.
Additionally, the program incorporates Community-Based Instruction, allowing students to take field trips that enhance their understanding of running a business. “With Knowledge Perk funding the grant, we are planning a couple of trips to learn more skills with working in a coffee business,” their teacher shared. These trips will give students hands-on experience in the industry, further expanding their skills and career exposure.
Beyond skill development, the Coffee Cart plays a significant role in promoting inclusion at Dutchman Creek. Faculty and staff regularly engage with students, fostering relationships that extend beyond the classroom. “The Coffee Cart is also one of the ways we promote inclusion at Dutchman Creek. It is a blessing to see how the staff members bond with our students,” their teacher said. This project has created a space where students feel valued, supported, and connected to their school community.
As the Coffee Cart continues to grow, so does its impact. With the unwavering support of the Foundation for Rock Hill Schools, Knowledge Perk Coffee, and Dutchman Creek’s dedicated staff, this initiative is brewing success—one cup at a time.
